About Me

Originally from Liverpool, England, (home of Liverpool Football Club) I moved to Canada in 1982. I got my first computer that year (Timex Sinclair 1000 with 2KB RAM!) and have enjoyed working with computers and software ever since.

I went to school for Electrical Engineering, specialized in Computer Engineering, and then ended up taking a job in IT when I graduated in 1992. After a year of mainframe fun I started building workflow apps on OS/2 - funny how much you can get done when you don't know what you don't know! I joined a consulting company in 1995 and, except for a few years spent in start-ups, have been consulting ever since.

Tracy and I got married in 1993 and started a family that same year. Joe and Mike are now teenagers and a source of constant newness. Along the way we've been fortunate to live in some great places (Toronto, Regina, Calgary) before finally settling where we are now.

In 2007 my family gave up city life and moved in to a 7-acre century homestead outside Glenboro, in Manitoba. Moving to the country was a long-held dream and circumstance led us to an old farm site in the rolling parkland of south-western Manitoba. After a couple of years on the homestead we absolutely love it, especially how you get to build things up year after year. The local community has also been fantastic, providing a sense of belonging much great than we had in the city.

Tracy is an enthusiastic homesteader, dedicated homeschooler and a passionate foodie - check out her site over at www.newcenturyhomestead.com

I've been fortunate to be able to maintain consulting work (mostly away from home) since we moved, and have enjoyed the perspective on IT and computing that part-time roles provide. I still enjoy it as much as ever. Information Technology is still in it's infancy. The only way forward is to challenge conventional thinking and seek new ways of doing things that provide more value. IT 'for the sake of IT' is still all too common. We need to remember where we came from and stay focused on fostering the innovation that created this industry.
